A Bit of History Today in Niles Canyon...
Author: BoilingMan

This morning Howard Wise and his colleagues made a bit of history-  They took SP 9010 out on the road unassisted!    Today a K-M ran on the SP for the first time since 1968.  No small thing!
Bravo!

The top photo shows what 9010 looked like when we got it.
Today it ran unassisted for the first time since being retired in 1968.

It's amazing to see a crew of volunteers bring back any locomotive as far-gone as that one was, but to bring back THAT one - a strange foreign beast that was hard enough for a huge Class 1 railroad to keep running when it was new - is a whole different stratum.  Great job, guys!

Agree with everyone that this is truly remarkable. When I contacted Howard many years ago with some contact info for an engineer at Siemens, formerly K-M in Munich, when I first heard of their plans, I never expected the restoration would proceed to an actual running locomotive. I hope to someday make it West to California to see it in person.

Fantastic! Amazing what some rubbing compund and polish can do, not to mention a lot of dedicated work by a bunch of volunteers!
Congratulations.
