Nostalgia & History > Southern Railway Yard in Alexandria VADate: 01/09/25 12:16 Southern Railway Yard in Alexandria VA Author: gcw I guess this also qualifies for Thirty Thursday.
I recently stumbled across these 3 slides in an unlabeled little yellow box. They were all that was left of a roll of Kodachrome that got exposed to light when an ex-girlfriend opened the back of the camera without rewinding the roll. It took a bit of processing in Photoshop to recover them to this state. These were taken at the former Southern Railway Alexandria Yard near the shop building. The old roundhouse is off to left. The photos I took of the roundhouse were lost. The date is November 1988. The locomotive closest to me is GP30 2573. It had already been desecrated, oops I mean painted in the new Norfolk Southern scheme. The other 2 locomotives are GP38-2 5223 and GP50 7081. Thanks for looking. They are history, because I think this whole business was torn down and redeveloped. Southern had this engine facility near Potomac Yard and another small yard with service facilities south and west of the Alexandria passenger station. It is all suburban housing now. Or commercial property now.

Date: 01/10/25 08:05 Re: Southern Railway Yard in Alexandria VA Author: aehouse This facility was the Duke Street Yard, which dated to before the CIvil War. It was also the home base for the many 1970s and early 1980s Southern Railway steam trips that operated out of Alexandria to various Southern (and later NS) locations. As noted, the property was sold, the yard and buildings demplished, and the area totally redeveloped with both commericlal and residential structures. It is today unrecongnizeable.
