Interesting pilot omn the 4012.  Was that a B&O-uniqyue pilot?  Looks sorts of streamliuned.  I'm guessing it was likely retrofitted after the footboards were removed.

Virtually all of the B&O and C&O GP40s and 40-2s I have photos of had this pilot.  Some of their SD40s and 40-2s had it as well, and I've seen it on a couple of GP38s.  I've heard it called a "rock" pilot, not sure if that was an official designation or not.  Attached pic shows B&O 7605 at Lima OH with a rock pilot the same month she was built (JAN 77), so it was likely applied at the factory.

We had a bunch with those "rock pilots" left.....so many been sold off and it's a sin and a shame....

C&o-B&O started having these type of pilots added to all new locomotives about 1970 or 71. There was a smaller more angular type added to the rear.
