Author: 3rdswitch . . . in APR '74, Santa Fe 5673 was leading the San Bernardino to Watson yard and return "Wilmington Turn" at Watson yard in Wilmington, CA, on Santa Fe's Harbor District building it's outbound train. Watson yard served both the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles as well as the surrounding industrial area with traffic good enough at the time for a couple of trains a day in and out a day in addition to a six day a week Watson to Hobart yard in Los Angeles "Hobart Turn". In the sixties and seventies there were no less than twelve road switchers serving the west end of the twenty eight mile long branch as well as at least four yard jobs up in Los Angeles area serving the east ten miles of the branch. As a quick explanation, on Santa Fe in Los Angeles, yard jobs handled most of the work within ten miles of Hobart yard and road switchers handled MOST of the rest of the work outside that distance. Road switchers were restricted to a twenty five mile reach from it's on duty point, anything further was handled by "locals". Each of these job designations involved their own restrictions as well as rates of pay.
