CB&Q 9987B With a Dinky and a Limited
Author: MartyBernard

CB&Q E9A 9987B was built in January 1956, became BN 9982, and then was rebuilt into BN E9AM 9912 with HEP instead of steam.

1. Crossing Cass Ave. in Westmont, IL on a cold January 4, 1965, 9978B has an express dinky rolling nicely toward Chicago. All three tracks are bi-directional and she is taking advantage of that. The sun is just up enough to put a little light on her nose.

2 and 3. 9987B on that wonderful curve in Lisle, IL has the westbound North Coast Limited on August 27, 1969.  In six and a half hours she should be in St. Paul.

Very nice, Marty. I’m impressed that at that late date they were still able to dispatch a North Coast Limited with enough cars to run a train separate from the Empire Builder and Afternoon Zephyr. Also I don’t ever recall seeing a Dinky with a gallery car mixed in with the old equipment, other than just a generator car

It was summer..  In winter the Q combined those trains.

Having a mix of Gallery Cars and Single Decks was pretty common during the transition from Single Decks to Gallery Cars.

Fun looking back at all the transitions the railroads were dealing with trying to stay out of, or getting out of bankruptcy, while required to provide passenger service, particularly in Chicago and all the northeastern cities. My personal experience was Philadelphia and suburbs. While I never depended on heavy rail as Septa terms it for a two-week period I did commute by rail. After my wife wrecked her car and with two young children she still needed transportation in the form of a car while the body shop repaired her car.
Each morning I would drive to the local Septa station and take an inbound train to an intermediate stop. Then transfer to an outbound train on a different branch to reach my employment directly next to another Septa station. Fun while it lasted. During the day the wife would put the little one in a stroller and she and the older one would walk the mile or so to our local station and pick up the car when needed. When she did she would pack up the kids and pick me up at the end of the day.
The train travel added about an hour to my normal driving commute time, so not really sustainable for the long run.

And seemingly no one in the dome-sleeper.  Tsk Tsk.

Thanks for the pics, Marty.

The Schlitz sign, zebra-striped crossing gate, and train speed stand out.

Love those shots!

I don't have the 1965 Guide, but, according to the 1964 and 1966 Guides, only the Empire Builder and the Afternoon Zephyr were combined in the off season and separated during the summer.  Even in the off season, the North Coast Limited ran separately, departing Chicago at 12:20 or 12:10.  The Builder/Zephyr combo ran at 2:30 off season.  My guess is that the NCL had an overall slower route, and the GN was unwilling to slow the Empire Builder to help out the competition.

Once BN took over and before Amtrak, all three trains were combined off-season, departing Chicago at 12:30 p.m.  BN was then willing to slow the Builder (?), but it still arrived in Seattle about an hour before the NCL.

Photos #2 and #3 are from the famous Yenda Road one lane auto wooden bridge. I visited that location quite a number of times, especially for winter snow photos, in the late 70s and 80s. The bridge is long gone now. Nice work.
