SP Hamburger in a Basket
Author: RDC1

Looking at some SP Menus from the 1960's, I noticed "Hamburger In A Basket"
was featured a lot. Did anybody ever have a chance to try this? (Or know anyone
who did?)

Was it any good? Or was it just "McDonalds on rails".

Popular. Just a grilled burger with bun in a basket with chips

Not 1968. Automats on the train

On board #51, the San Joaquin Daylight. Sat down at a table in the coffee shop car. Those little blue menus were already in place at each spot on the table. But when the waiter arrived to take our orders, the first thing out of his mouth was “We’re all out of hamburger” so ate some other non-memorable sandwich.

In the 1940s and 1950s, food was a (maybe The) major expenditure for most families. Housing was not nearly as much as a percentage of the family budget.

The era of factory farms in the USA, and fast-food outlets nearly everywhere serving cheap beef imported from South America, hadn't yet arrived. So a good hamburger (made with raised-in-the-USA non-factory beef) was a treat!

I agree. I would take the SP Hamburger over today's fast food options. I wonder if you could get it with cheese?

I was lucky enough to have enjoyed the SP burgers on their Hamburger-Grill cars and triple-unit diners on excursions out of Los Angeles and regular service trains before being subjected
to the Automats.
The Espee used a
paticular blend of ground chuck that when cooked over the gas or charcoal grill  provided a tasty and juicy patty that I remember even today (think Red Robin or other "high-end" burgers).
Quite a contrast to the flat-grilled burgers served on the Santa Fe Del Mar race track specials and some excursions! I never did try the Radar-Range burgers served on the Automats, as you
couldn't go wrong with Nalley's beef stew or hash out of a can!
