Nostalgia & History > SP Hamburger in a BasketDate: 02/04/25 13:44 SP Hamburger in a Basket Author: RDC1 Looking at some SP Menus from the 1960's, I noticed "Hamburger In A Basket"
was featured a lot. Did anybody ever have a chance to try this? (Or know anyone who did?) Was it any good? Or was it just "McDonalds on rails". Date: 02/04/25 14:50 Re: SP Hamburger in a Basket Author: E25 Maybe "no survivors." (... just kidding, :>)

Date: 02/04/25 23:11 Re: SP Hamburger in a Basket Author: Westbound On board #51, the San Joaquin Daylight. Sat down at a table in the coffee shop car. Those little blue menus were already in place at each spot on the table. But when the waiter arrived to take our orders, the first thing out of his mouth was “We’re all out of hamburger” so ate some other non-memorable sandwich.

The era of factory farms in the USA, and fast-food outlets nearly everywhere serving cheap beef imported from South America, hadn't yet arrived. So a good hamburger (made with raised-in-the-USA non-factory beef) was a treat! - Doug Debs Date: 02/05/25 11:00 Re: SP Hamburger in a Basket Author: ts1457 DWDebs/2472 Wrote:

I would take the SP Hamburger over today's fast food options. I wonder if you could get it with cheese? to the Automats. The Espee used a paticular blend of ground chuck that when cooked over the gas or charcoal grill provided a tasty and juicy patty that I remember even today (think Red Robin or other "high-end" burgers). Quite a contrast to the flat-grilled burgers served on the Santa Fe Del Mar race track specials and some excursions! I never did try the Radar-Range burgers served on the Automats, as you couldn't go wrong with Nalley's beef stew or hash out of a can! |
