Nostalgia & History > When Horseshoe Went to ThreeDate: 02/06/25 10:06 When Horseshoe Went to Three Author: aehouse An eastbound Conrail intermodal train drops downgrade around Horseshoe Curve, near Altoona, Pa., in 1983. The empty area to the left of the train had been--for more than 100 years--the location of the fourth track around the curve. The track was made surplus by an upgrade to the line's dispatching and signalling technology, and had been removed in 1981. (My photo.)

Not being super familiar with the area around Horseshoe Curve, my assumption is that those two units are pushers -- headlight seems dimmed or unlit, and those ex-EL SD45-2s tended to do more shoving than leading.

Never saw it myself and makes me wonder how often it ran. Thought there was a Sea Land train that ran the Southern Tier with Susie Q power as it was a NYSW Train. Ran with BN power at times as well. Thought it was also the reason the NYSW purchased the big F45's/SD45's Neat shot. Ben
