Heres another shot of the Sierra #28 taken in October 1961 in Sonora. Do the tracks still go into Sonora?

Check the date on this one, Bob. I think this mixed was a PLA trip ran in Oct. of 1971, not 1961. A friend & I rode the boxcar for a few miles. Joe Francis was the engineer & Mike Pardini was the fireman.

Photobob's shot shows a mixed train operated on October 25, 1961. The boxcar is a New York Central car. Trip was sponsored by Pacific Coast Chapter, R&LHS.

MY APOLOGIES!
I was in error. There was a PLA mixed in Oct. of 1971, 10 years after Bob shot his pics of the 28, but the consist was different. His had just the one NYC boxcar & 3 coaches plus caboose while ours had 3 or 4 boxcars (mostly ATSF), one coach & a caboose. Quite a co-incidence & I got bitten on this one!

You're right about one thing, Tom! The Oct., 1961 crew was also Joe Francis and Mike Pardina.

The tracks still pass "through" Sonora to get to the lumber mill at Standard. The rails are still in place all of the way to Tuolumne, but there are several breaks between Standard and Tuolumne. The background in this has all but completely changed since the photo was taken. The Sierra RR station and the super market are gone, replaced by the new post office. Homes have been built on the hillside in the background.

It's a neat hike from Ralph's Station back to Draper and Black Oak trestles. Fun ride too behind steam when the excursions went that far in the seventies.
