Woody Allen's "Radio Days"
Author: Erik

About halfway through this great movie there is some stock footage of New York's Times Square in the 1940's.

Moving through the frame is a street car without any catenary or trolley polls.

How did these cars work? A cable, like San Francisco, or some internal power?

Pardon my ignorance, I missed the wonderful traction era completely.

Thanks,

Erik

Not sure about NY, but in Washinton DC trolley power pick up was done underground. A shoe or"plow" was hung under the car and contacted underground third rails.

Great movie. Manhattan streetcars used essentially the same system as Washington.

Thanks guys. Why they ever got rid of the streetcars I'll never know.

Now we'll spend billions rebuilding the "light rail" replacements for what we already had.

What a crazy waste of money.
