"Backdated" SP 2248
Author: n6nvr

SP 2248 after having been relieved of fire train service on Donner was "backdated" by the SP for promotional purposes. This was taken either along San Fernando Rd or down by the Spring St. Station. Note the pedestrian bridge to the rear of the train. This was probably taken in 56 or 57. The engine was later sold and was stored in the backdated visage in San Fernando where it was knocked over in the '71 earthquake. Subsequently it was sold again and is (I believe) still running on the Texas State RR.

Was mentioned in the Tiburon threads below. This looks like it was shot at Taylor Roundhouse.

Yes, this is the famous "Tarantula Train" (only major difference from afar is the cap stack!). Still keeps her old number, too.

Looks like the 1st pic is in the "Bullring", with Spring Street to the right. It's on the 'East' main. Just north of Philippes!

Yeah I found another pic from the other side that shows it definitely to be up there and not at Taylor.

My Grandfather used to be the agent at that station in the 30's

The SP 2248 was a very popular excursion engine in Northern California in the 50's... St.Helena, Sacramento, lots of neat places. I'll have to look for my photos of the trips, if you're interested..
