were these SDL39s. August '76 photo of MILW 587. Not exactly sure where this was taken, but given the month and year it quite likely was in beautiful Fargo. N.D. Niote then engine # stenciled on the fuel tank.

Somethin' tells me this slide was processed in January '72 but not taken that month. There's a guy standing by the depot in short sleeves!!

I heard great things about those SDL39s on the Branch lines in Wisconsin...

History is funny, isn't it? First BN is allowed to merge all around the Milwaukee, killing it. Then years later, a combined BN and Santa Fe (unthinkable!) copies their very colors as their own image! Milwaukee Road lives - again! - - - - - - JLH

I shot MILW 287 in July of 1977. Can anyone ID where I took this shot? All I remember is that we were driving on I-5 between Portland OR and Seattle WA.

You are not reading the date right. The shot is of 1-262 getting ready to leave Avery in the summer of 73 (July or August). The usual lash-up on that train at that time: A Joe piloting 3 SD40-2s. The Milw SD40-2s entered service in August, 1972.

I can assure you that Mr. Brown took a bye on the summer 72 railfan season, then went up to the Rocky Mtn Divn and did a lot of shooting in summer 73. So I am sure the shot was taken in 73.

From the angle of the sun, I'd guess somewhere close to Centralia or Chehalis, WA.
