Twenty some years ago I took this picture of one of the hobo signatures carved into the wood pipe insolation box of the Black Butte water tank, near Weed, California. (John Dillinger 1934) Story goes is that his gang robbed a bank in Redding, CA during the early 30s and lived in Dunsmuir for a hideout. Another link to that story is back in the 1980s, a box of a lot of old dated cash was found in the basement of a house where the basement was being excavated to be enlarge. Did he leave town heading north on the old SP?

When I was working the Michigan trains, I would close the bar at Porter, IN and make an announcement about Dillinger's last hold-up there. I'm not familiar with his Western hold-ups but that would certainly make an interesting story.

I don't think that was "The" John Dillinger. But "a" John Dillinger.

Did he take trains, undoubtedly. Was he (The Public Enemy #1 Dillinger) in CA during 34, not according to this.

Looks like as close as he got was in AZ in January '33, he was arrested and returned to the midwest, where he stayed until killed in 34. Had he been in CA before? who knows.

Dillinger's penis is kept in the Smithsonian Institution. Just thought y'all would want to know.

I heard that myth over 40 years ago. I remember when our class went their on a bus trip. Some of us tried to find it! .......LOL
