Traffic patterns were nothing like they should have been in July of 1993. Despite the cresting flood waters, C&NW’s crossing at Clinton, Iowa remained open, and so the C&NW found itself running other folk's trains.
An example was this westbound SOO detouring to Kansa City, their own mainline at Muscatine under water.

The CN&W had lots of traffic of their own to move too, as illustrated by this 139 car eastbound behind an SD60/SD50 duo.

Don't forget that the Empire Builder was running over the CNW during this time as well. I remember seeing one pic of the train being led by an Metra (ex-CNW) E8. Jeff

are you mistaking the builder for the CZ? Trains 5 and 6 where regulars on the e/w main from chicago to omaha back in 93.

I happened to be in the right place at the right time to see the Amtrak California Zephyr head westbound behind a Metra E8A. Wish I had my camcorder.
