variety at Arnold Street in '90
Author: 3rdswitch

I just returned from a vacation back east and a visit with my cousin in South Bend, IN, prompted these happy memories from a favorite train watching spot we used to hang out at the Arnold Street crossing, just west of downtown South Bend, where the exNYC CR line, now NS, and the GTW split and go their seperate ways. Also, the exNYC Kankakee line headed southwest at this spot as well, although, at this time the east end of the line was no longer in service. These shots, taken in Sept '90, are in the actual sequence that the trains arrived starting with a westbound CR UP runthrough led by this CR SD.

Next came a westbound GT train headed onto GT rails off of CR trackage rights through town, led by a CSSSB [South Shore] GP 38.

And lastly, a westbound "Trunk" train, led by a pair of GP's is headed off CR trackage rights onto "Trunk" trackage about to cross Arnold Street. You used to be able to park right here between the two mains, however, sometime in the late '90's, Arnold Street was closed to through traffic, and requires a little walk. There is a public park on the southwest quadrant where the street used to go through and you can park there, however, the neighborhood has deteriorated and, with NS's strict security it just isn't the same, although traffic is still heavy through here. In this photo, the track to the far right is the old CR Kankakee "belt" line, now just a short spur to the small CR yard west of here.
