Turning back the clock at Hawk Junction.
Author: Alco251

It is July, 2000, and the scene at Hawk Junction, Ontario is a timeless image of passenger railroading, as a traditional depot cart full of baggage and express shipments is loaded onto Algoma Central "baggage and express" car 300, an ex-D&RGW baggage RPO. We're watching traditional "head end work" on the thrice-weekly, northbound Sault Ste. Marie-Hearst passenger train. This was a scene repeated thousands of times in a like number of locales every day in North America...sadly, Hawk Junction and a handful of other small towns are the last places where an observer can turn back the clock and relive a common scene from half a century earlier. At certain times of the year, especially during hunting season, this scene would be considered a "light load." The friendly crew allows passengers to ride the cushions or join the locals in the baggage cars, with doors open to reveal the beautiful Ontario wilderness. I'll let you guess which accomodation visiting railfans prefer. David R. Busse photo.
