1980's GO
Author: refarkas

In the 1980's, when I would visit the Toronto area, I tried to get a few shots of the GO trains and ride them once in a while. Yes, I would photograph the more exotic VIA trains, but the green and gold GO trains were a pleasant change of pace. Please forgive me if the locations aren't quite correct; it has been many years since I took these.
Image one: GO 709 at Scarborough on 03/23/1982.
Image two: GO 900 in Toronto on 03/23/1982.
Image three: GO 904 in Toronto on 8/8/88 (08/08/1988).
Thank you Canada for all the good memories.

Great stuff. Were these F units running ones or were they cab cars? GO certainly had some really neat locos and I've always loved those Hawker Siddelly cars.

Nice shots! Two was taken from the Bathurst Street bridge downtown. Everything in the background is gone now.

Three is the stop at Exhibition, west of Bathurst. The bridge in the background is Dufferin Street, and is currently being replaced.

As far as I know these were all cab cars.

P.S. Thanks to both of you for the information and comments.

9 former Ontario Northland FP7A (900-908), 2 former MILW FP7A (910-911), and 3 ex-BN F7B, all converted to APCU or APU (Auxiliary Power Control Unit).

GO at one time had an eclectic roster consisting of the only GP40TC's built, GP40-2W, ex-Rock Island GP40, F40PH, and the APU/APCU. They also leased 3 CN standard-cab GP40's for a period of time, and even leased CN "Tempo" RS18's. The consist combinations were almost endless. Standardization on first F59PH then the current fleet of MP40's changed all that.

APCU's had 575v 600kw generators in them, as well as the necessary control stands to operate as a cab car. They were rebuilt by ONR, in a rare fit of government making good sense having one of their provincially owned companies (Ontario Northland) do the contract work for another one (Mertrolinx, GO Transit).
Here's a scan of a print I have in my collection.. I don't know who took the image, but all it says on the back is:
"Lakeshore Line East. By early 1984, there will be 151 bi-level coaches in the GO Transit Fleet"
