Hamilton, ON based National Steel Car announced a few days ago that they were having a job fair today (Sat Aug 23) to hire about 400 workers. They particularly need welders and announced they would be setting up their own welding school to provide training.

They had a good turnout .... about 1,100 applicants for the jobs which start at around $21 per hour.

NSC has a contract to manufacture many of the new tank car designs, doesn't it?

Finding welders, electricians, pipe fitters has become a major thorn for many firms.

Two paras from the item:

Human resources vice-president Hal Bruckner says 300 of those hired will be welders, while 100 will be in other roles such as crane operators and electricians.

He says the 120-year-old firm is hiring to diversify its business and due to increasing demand for cars carrying various commodities, such as potash, plastic pellets and grain.
