Canadian Railroads > A Lake Ontario north shore winter's day.Date: 10/20/14 22:17 A Lake Ontario north shore winter's day. Author: newtonville150 The winter of 1994 was bleak and cold out by the tracks around Port Hope, ON. We start off by the east switch of CP's Port Hope siding on the Belleville sub and watch an eastbound powered by an SD40-2 and a GP9. A typical consist at the time for perennially power short Canadian Pacific. Between trains we watch a fox out on the shore ice of Lake Ontario, which is several feet thick. Then an eastbound CN freight on the parallel Kingston sub passes us with an M-636 trailing. Railroads and railfans alike brave the cold weather, and in my case operate a camcorder with fingers numb from the cold and keeping the battery in my warm pocket until the last moment. Are we nuts or what?

Mind, you have photographed from one of the colder locations along the north shore of Lake Ontario. And in twenty years the differences such as a change in consists; boxcars versus containers and the lack of graffiti on the rolling stock. Difficult to believe too it has been twenty years since the friendly caboose brought up the rear of freight trains on both major Canadian railways. Author: newtonville150 And Bryce, the preponderance of autoparts boxcars on the CP train tells me the Ste Therese was still open when I shot this. As for the graffiti, I on;y noticed one car...a tankcar near the end of the CN train had some graffiti on it.
