Canadian Railroads > Some Montreal-area CN from 1976Date: 07/31/15 09:24 Some Montreal-area CN from 1976 Author: Ray_Murphy Here's a few more of my black-and-white photos from 1976. I rode CP Rail's single outbound morning commuter train from Westmount to Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue every day, and would sometimes see a fair amount of action in just a few minutes as I walked to work from the station.
On December 9, 1976, an eastbound CN intermodal freight was the first train to come by (Picture #1). GP40-2L(W) locomotives 9415 and 9554 were just 2 and 1 years old respectively. Even in 1976, CN was providing containerized electrical power units for their refrigerated container traffic (Picture #2). And, of course, freight trains in 1976 still had cabooses (Picture #3). Next was CN's Turbo #61 to Toronto, painted yellow in anticipation to the Via transition (Picture #4). Following #61 was a CN manifest freight with two more of the new GP40-2L(W) units, 9604 and 9428 (Picture #5). The first car behind the power was a CN flatcar carrying a small track broom-plow used to clean snow out of switches. I guess there was more snow in Toronto than Montreal that week (Picture #6). The remaining pictures are some of the other freight cars on the train. In particular I like the black CP cylindrical hoppers with their fresh coat of snow. Ray Edited 1 time(s). Rick Date: 07/31/15 14:14 Re: Some Montreal-area CN from 1976 Author: gaspeamtrak That boxcar doesn't have roller bearing, if I'm correct???
Date: 07/31/15 14:36 Re: Some Montreal-area CN from 1976 Author: kgmontreal The most interesting part of the photos are the Rockwell high speed trucks under the container flats. These had a very short service life, not because they didn't work properly but because they were oddballs. CN had another series of container flats with different high speed trucks that had individually sprung axles.
And yes the boxcar is on friction bearings. Neat shots. KG Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/31/15 15:56 by kgmontreal. Date: 07/31/15 19:05 Re: Some Montreal-area CN from 1976 Author: Charls And so is the flat car with the snow dozer
