Canadian Railroads > Entering Canada - or darn closeDate: 06/24/16 17:25 Entering Canada - or darn close Author: pummer A Canadian National freight crosses the International Railroad Bridge from Sault Ste. Marie, MI to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada on June 23, 2016. The bridge spans the St. Mary's River/Soo Locks canal system. The vertical lift span has just been lowered following the passage of the freighter Whitefish Bay - seen at the right of the photo as it enters the Poe lock, where it will be lowered about 21 feet to continue on to Lake Huron and eventually, its final destination of Montreal.

------------------------------------------------------- > How much traffic uses this line? Just this train, which turns in the Canadian yard and returns a couple hours later. There is a locomotive weight restriction on the bridge which prohibits coupled six-axles. This train often has a 50-car block of ore on the head end and runs DPU with the second unit behind the ore. The train pictured had only about six ore cars and arrived at Sault Ste. Marie with both engines back-to-back on the head end. Before crossing the bridge they buried the lead unit behind the ore and ran over the bridge from the second unit. |
