CP's St-Luc Yard
Author: Ray_Murphy

There's an article in the local Montreal newspaper The Suburban that discusses a meeting between the mayor of Cote St-Luc and a CP vice-president on the plan to move the St-Luc yards to a new off-island site the CP already owns the land for. All they are waiting for is "a serious development plan that's very financially interesting for CP Rail."

So, for CP, the Glen yard is gone and its site is now a hospital, the Outremont yard is now gone and is a University of Montreal development site, and the Hochelaga yard has been totally empty for months. St-Luc and Lachine are the last active facilities.

Wow, the "Suburban" newspaper has been around for decades. There was another inner suburban English language paper called the "Monitor" that covered NDG,Montreal West and other communities. I remember the "Suburban" and "Monitor" used to clash over editorial comments reflecting the complex social issues of Montreal society.

The wealthy residents of Cote St.Luc have had nimby issues with CP's Cote St.Luc yard forever, so if CP has promised to relocate, that will be a victory for them.

CP was there first, when Montreal expanded west after WW2.  CP's Cote St.Luc and CN's Montreal (Taschereau) classification yards were post war developments replacing smaller inner city freight yards.

The prosperity of the 1960's and 70's saw huge suburban developments west along the CP and CN main lines.
