Canadian Railroads > Last Canadian-Built Steam

I've tried asking this question in a variety of other places on the Web and I never seem to get an answer, so I'll try here. What were the last steam locomotives built for Canadian Railroads by Montreal Locomotive Works and the Canadian Locomotive Company and when were they built? And if there were any foreign steam engines built by them after that, when were they built? I'm also asking this question in the Steam Railroading thread.

As far as MLW goes, the last steam engines built for Canadian railway's were 2-10-4 Selkirk's for CP. I believe they constructed steam engines for India after that, but don't quote me on that. Not sure about CLC.

When did mainline steam operations on CN, CP, BCR, and ONR cease to run ?

In 1960 for CN and CP.

Last PGE steam-hauled train was on May 30, 1956.

As for BCR, it hosted a scheduled mainline steam-hauled excursion service from 1974 to 2000, making well over 2,000 trips during that period.

So whatever they bought in 1949 didn't last very long, barely broken in.

The point to this is?

MLW last order built for a Canadian Railway was  sale Q-419 for the Newfooundland Ry, serie 1024-1029 of 2-8-2 built in 1949 serials Nos. 76333, 424-8.
he CP Selkirk order was their second last for a Cdn Ry.
The last steam engine built by MLW were 2-8-2 in 1950 for the India State Railway, rd # M1-M20 serials Nos 77606-25

By early 1950, Mr Crump was already a year into the diesel "experiment" on the Wells River line in Vermont.  The RS-2 diesels were performing ahead of expectations, and the handwriting was on the wall for steam.
