Quebec City

I'm planning to be in Quebec City this coming long weekend. I know where to find VIA and CN, but QGRY interests me too. What do they run in the capital area? Is there likely to be anything to find on the weekend?

Joffre has the advantage of being really busy freight-wise during daylight. With the exception of 305 and 400 virtually everything is shootable. Here's a summary list:

306 departs early morning
402 departs mid-morning
310 arrives about noon
120 arrives after 310
401 departs early afternoon
309 departs mid afternoon
121 departs after 309
403 comes back
730 is a wild card

Obviously, trains can get delayed. The other day 309 followed 120 from Montreal as an example.

You might consider a look at the Sartigan. Their RS-18 and RS-23 are kept at Scott Jct. At one point they ran on Staurdays because the owner had a full time job and only had weekends off to run the train. But their business has increased and they run during the week so I'm not sure if their current schedule includes Saturday. But it's not far down to Scott. When they do run they go on duty in the morning, depart for Joffre about 0900, get there and switch, head out of Joffre around noon for the return trip south.

As for the QG, they inherited CPR's "new" Henri IV yard which is off-limits. Some of the Quebec City fans take telephoto shots of power at the shop. I think the QG's mainline freight makes a nightime turn from Quebec to Trois-Rivieres. But it's not something I've ever done. With CPR in such a sorry state QG is trying to interchange as much traffic as possible to CN. They do this at Allenby. QG's road/dispatcher frequency is 161.265 and their yard channel is 160.815. All communications will be in French.

Hope this helps.

Ken

I believe Sartigan is indeed still often running on Saturday's.

Are those all CN trains running on their line on the south side of the St. Lawrence between Montreal and St. André Jct.?

What makes the CPR such a sorry state in Quebec?

Not this Saturday.

I found the power at Scott around13:00, but it wasn't running, and nobody seemed to be around.

I did see 120, east of St. Appolinaire, and later shot what I assume was 309, from a bridge over the highway and parallel track.

I'll go looking for QGRY tomorrow.

Geoff
