RTM Mascouche Line – What is it??
Author: ghCBNS

What is this tunnel-like structure near Repentigny covering RTM’s line to Mascouche. It’s a KM + long, enclosed on the north side, open on the south and has a roof.

The berms and concrete cover are a blast barrier. You can see an explosives storage area just to the north of this line on Google Earth.

When designing service to Mascouche, there was an option, rejected, to branch off the AMT Ste Jerome line to get there so as to avoid this munitions dump.

That structure looks like a snowshed on a rail line in the Rockies.

Strange choice of alignment . . . looks like there's quite a bit of relatively undeveloped land to the south of Route 640 where a station could have been built on the southern edge of Repentigny without that loop to the north. Guess they had their reasons for building it where they did.

The Quebec remote train uses that route to Repentigny, but of course can't use the Mt Royal tunnel. The CN once ran an electric service, once in a while with an MU, over a portion of that line as far a Montreal North, I believe.
