Shortline Sunday 1996
Author: kgmontreal

One of the more obscure Canadian shortlines was the Ontario l'Orignal Railway of eastern Ontario. If I'm not mistaken it was the first shortline to be spun out of the major Canadian railways when Parliament enacted legislation permitting the process. Its line was the former Canadian National branch from Glen Robertson to Vankleek Hill, Hawkesbury and l'Original, site of the Ivaco steel mill. Later the ownership changed from RailTex to the Quebec Railway Corp operators of the Ottawa Central Railway. When that company went bankrupt the line reverted to Canadian National which operates the branch today.

In the fall of 1996 I photographed the Ontario l'Orignal Railway on its daily run to and from the l'Orignal steel mill. Here's a view of it on the southbound trip between Vankleek Hill and Glen Robertson. The lead unit was an ex-Cartier GP9 while the second loco was ex-GTW GP18 #4700.

Enjoy.

Excellent picture and scan from a line rarely seen.

Ken, that is exquisite! The lighting, the contrast between the colours of the locomotives and lack of same in much of the surroundings, and that perfect grade crossing, angling across, both cross-bucks visible, and even hiding the power line in the background. Can't be beat.
