VIA's shortlist to make new Central Canada Corridor trainsets
Author: Marcus

VIA has announced the shortlist of manufacturers
invited to bid on the manufacture of a "brand new set of trains",
for its Central Canadian Corridor services.
In 2017, the Corridor accounted for 77 percent of VIA's revenue,
and 95 percent of passenger trips.

"Key Fleet Requirements" include,

32 bi-directional train sets to "replace the current fleet".

"Enhanced Universal Accessibility"

Tier 4 diesel locomotives,
"with the option to operate on electrified rail infrastructure as it becomes available."

"Capability of trainsets to operate in either direction (push-pull)
to reduce the turnaround time for trains at stations."

The shortlisted manufacturers are -

Bombardier
Siemens
Stadler
Talgo

The new equipment is expected to enter service starting in 2022.

I hope Siemens, since that will likely be the new standard Amtrak car, but in any case, I hope NOT Talgo.

Siemens makes a wonderful car for BrightLine.

Opening a Canadian production line and supplier chain sounds achievable.

So you say. In the meantime, the Montreal Metro is now fully equipped with these very nice Azur trainsets:

The "last run" nostalgia trips of the earlier MR-73's have been taking place this month.

Ray;

Slight correction, they are MR-63's that are making their last runs.

Cheers.

It's actually the MR-63's making their last run this week. The MR-73's soldier on, though not for much longer.
