The Canadian Rockies By Daylight
Author: ghCBNS

Today's 'Rocky Mountaineer' actually had it's beginnings in VIA's 'Canadian Rockies by Daylight' service launched 30 years ago in summer 1988. The following year it was renamed VIA's 'Rocky Mountaineer' but didn't make it to a third season because of the massive VIA cuts in January 1990....and was sold-off.

Here is a September 1988 picture of the VIA Rocky Mountaineer meeting the VIA Canadian at Kicking Horse.  The warm lighting is the result of smoke from fires in Yellowstone National Park drifting north into Canada.

Sold off for a bargain, and it was easily a good profit center for VIA. But no way was Mulroney going to give in. And Armstrong was right there to lobby successfully to get the "operation" and ensure VIA was driven right off the rails, to this day and with their own coaches that Armstrong also "got."
