My "cabin for one" or what we would used to call a "roomette"... and a look at one in an older scheme.

Like an old, cozy house with a porch, there is just some things that new constrcution, like Superliners and Viewliners, cannot duplicate today.

Those stainless steel cabinets either side of the rear door contain(ed), the left side, air brake pressure valve, and conductors brake valve. However where back up moves were made, a "rat tail" was connected to the rear brake hose. The rat tail includes a small whistle and a brake valve. A rat tail was a metal pipe extension attached to the rear of the train, and hung from the end of a caboose or coach. CN also had portable back up lights in some locations.

The right side had a steam pressure guage and a large handle for "blowing down" steam from the steam pipe. Because the steam condensed into water once in the heating system, the pipe had to be vented frequently to avoid filling with water.

Even with regular venting, in steam heat days, the rear cars of a passenger train could get cold.

In very cold weather, CN would add a steam generator car to the rear of the "Super Continental" to avoid the rear cars freezing up.

Beautiful photos. The diner interior is far better than anything Amtrak has ever offered. That said, I sort of prefer the previous scheme with more art deco lights and the pink accents instead of all black and white.
