It Certainly Beats Driving - GO 723
Author: refarkas

GO 723 is westbound in Toronto in August 1986. Riding the GO train certainly looks less stressful than driving in the traffic next to it.

Thanks for that....and BTW...a big increase in GO service on some lines starting today will get more drivers of the road. Lakeshore East is going to trains every 15 mins all day!

are all of the platforms big enough for those long commuter trains or do they "double spot" them?

And that is not really heavy traffic on the Gardiner Expressway ... it gets much, much heavier than that!
I'm glad I no longer have to commute to Toronto!

That's only a 10-car train.  Most seem to be 12-car now, and I'm pretty sure all the platforms are long enough.

And on the tail-end, an 8xx series APCU (converted F7B) and probably a 7xx GP40-2L.

In that period that combination was common, and also a 72x GP40-2 coupled to a CN GP40 (7312 or 7319 if I recall correctly) on the west end
and a 9xx series APCU on the east end.

Almost all platforms can handle the 12 car train, but there are exceptions. I know Markham isn't long enough for anything over 6, so they only open half the train. Many of the platforms have been lengthened over the last few years to accomodate the 12packs. They run, 6, 10 & 12 car trains.  It's a good pic, but that traffic is NOTHING like that these days.
