CN Accommodations 1965

Here’s a CN Accommodations Brochure from 1965. Some of these were old Heavyweight cars from the ’20s....upgraded with very modern interiors.

In the mid ’70 the brochure was updated showing several newer accommodations when ‘VIA CN’ had been formed as the passenger marketing department.....but it would be another year before ‘VIA Rail Canada Inc’ was spun-off as a separate Crown Corporation.

Above you can see how CN’s daytime first-class accommodations evolved over that decade from the old style swivel Parlor Car to the ‘Forty-Five Seat’ Parlor Car with 2&1 seating….then to the ‘Club-Galley’ cars with at-seat meal and beverage service......and eventually to ‘VIA-1’ and ‘VIA Business Class’ of today

I love the first Roomette room description:  "LOTS of room for one."

Back in the ‘70s when I started working and could afford to upgrade myself from coach to section and eventually to a Roomette/Duplex Roomette....that was my preference. But now just the thought of the toilet in the same room and all that surrounding carpet!! Gross and something to be avoided!!

Guess I’ve been spoiled by those comfortable Renaissance Bedrooms with their enclosed toilets and showers.

Those illustrations really are a great look at an idealized version of Canadian culture - late 1960's version.  But I suspect that at that time, those illustrations were not far off the mark of reality.

Happy folks riding those CN trains.

Are all of the drawings from the 1965 brochure?  Some of the later ones seem to depict more late sixties or early seventies hairstyles and fashion.  I seem to remember CN using this style of promotion into the 1970s.

Mid-way through my post (where the VIA appears) I note:

In the mid ’70 the brochure was updated showing several newer accommodations when ‘VIA CN’ had been formed as the passenger marketing department.....but it would be another year before ‘VIA Rail Canada Inc’ was spun-off as a separate Crown Corporation.

Thanks for making the effort to scan and post. Great illustrations of CN really trying to make a go of it
