Around the Halifax Roundhouse in the Late '70s

A walk around the Halifax Fairview Roundhouse in the late '70s was never a problem. Just ask if you could take a few pictures and all they'd say was "be careful"

Oh, I don't know about that Gary!  I was there in Halifax in early October 1977, stopped by the rounhouse and barely stepped on the property when a CN cop came up, asked what I was doing.  I told him and that I was a railfan from California and wanted to take some photos, and he asked me to go down to the offices downtown and get permission.  Turned out to be a real friendly guy.  So next morning, I went to the offices, asked for a permit, got one without any problem, and went back to the Halifax roundhouse and no one said a word.

Yeah, I know.  I need to scan those slides.  And thanks for showing yours!!

They were stored on the short stub tracks around the turntable (see the 1st photo above)

Was always nice to see a concentration of VIA RDC's (Dayliners) at Nova Scotia, except in the early 1990s when discontinuance came and they were STACKED up in the Halifax yard waiting for transfer back to Montreal.

In VIA's heyday of RDC's in the Maritimes, they seemed to always be coming in and turning around and going back out! Some got to have a little layover, as seen here.

They were such great rail cars for the Maritimes! Be it gathering locals from branch lines to bring to the mainline, or just trying to keep people moving with transportation options.
