Canadian Railroads > TSB: Final Report on fatal Woss, BC logging car derailmentDate: 12/12/18 22:49 TSB: Final Report on fatal Woss, BC logging car derailment Author: Marcus The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has released its final report
on the fatal logging car derailment at Woss, B.C., on Vancouver Island, on Western Forest Products' Englewood Railway. On April 20, 2017, eleven loaded logging cars rolled out of the Woss Reload Centre after a knuckle inadvertently released. There had previously been a coupler repair, resulting in an atypical coupler. The lead truck of the loaded logging cars derailed on a derail, but due to inadequate spikes, rotted ties, and fouled ballast, the derail failed and no further trucks were derailed. The lead truck was re-railed at a switch, allowing the cars to continue downhill. Between 90 and 127 seconds later, the cars reached a speeder and an on-track backhoe, resulting in three employee fatalities and two employees seriously injured. On November 7, 2017, Western Forest Products announced the closure of the Englewood Railway.
