Canadian Railroads > Via Rail "Canadian" new schedule

How's the timekeeping been lately? No absurdly late trains? Is the new schedule being kept reasonably well?  Have a 20-hour layover between Vancouver arrival and a flight home in March...hoping that's not cutting it close.

My view is that with 20 hours you should be fine. My last arrival at Vancouver was on time even after sitting for close to an hour south of the Fraser River bridge. Lots of pad in the schedule close to the end. But remember, as all of us train riders know, things can happen on any train causing plans to fall apart.I try to have a back plan just in case.

Hi Right now #2 is showing on transitdocs as being 14 hrs late at Washago and it still has another 100 miles or so to get to Toronto.Don't know the reason for it being that late. Cheers Greengrocer

Of the 14 westbound trains departing Toronto from November 6 through December 22, all but one of them was late. The worst was 14 hours late, another was 13 hours and two were 10 hours.

The next two Toronto departures were slightly early at Vancouver, which brings us to the January 1 departure which was annulled at Winnipeg (after arriving on time) on account of the CN freight derailment near Portage la Prairie. Onward passengers were bused to Melville, Sask., where the annulled No. 2 was turned around to continue as No. 1.  Some 14 hours after getting to Melville (and seven hours after the scheduled time for No. 1), it departed westward with the bussed passengers and was only two hours late at Vancouver, arriving at 20:05.

The most recent Toronto departure (January 5) is only 21 minutes late, just south of Valemount, B.C., so it stands a chance of arriving early at Vancouver.

UPDATED at 22:25 PST to add precise time of Vancouver arrival of "bus bridge" train.

CN suffered a derailment.

Thanks for the information. I thought that must have been the reason that #2, having arrived in Hornepayne almost an hour early, departed 13 hours 23 minutes late. Arrival in Toronto was at 02:35. Number 1 departed Toronto this morning at 09:30 - 11 1/2 hours late.

And further news that I learned was the derailment was in the middle of nowhere, to coin a phrase.
