Canadian Railroads > Aldersyde AB stationDate: 02/18/19 20:22 Aldersyde AB station Author: eminence_grise To go with arwye's post, here is Aldersyde station, about the same timeframe as his photo.
A mystery, the admiralty style flagpole beside the station. Here's a guess. Both Fort Macleod and Vulcan had Commonwealth Air Training Bases during WW2 where airmen from all over the Commonwealth learned to fly from basic trainer to multi-engine bombers. After the war was over, many items were sold as is, where is . A military flagpole may have caught the attention of a CP station agent.Later on, it was adapted to form a base for a railway radio antenna. Another war surplus item possibly from Calgary or southern Alberta from a CATS base is this Commer Commando aircrew bus. The RAF took a prewar "deck and a half" design bus designed to take airline passengers from downtown London directly to pioneer airliners at Croydon "aerodrome". The RAF ordered 100 of these buses. Two or three survive in the UK , and this one is now kept in a shed near Cranbrook BC owned by a preservation group in Britain. The engine is servicable. Edited 4 time(s). It was probably was built on a hardwood frame, possibly with a steel chassis. Why the RAF didn't use standard military trucks like the USAF I'm not sure. Chevrolet had a truck plant near London at Bedford. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 02/18/19 21:56 by eminence_grise. |
