Another Laggan Derailment
Author: mp35mountain

I'm seeing reports of another Laggan derailment sometime yesterday afternoon. Supposedly 20 cars on the ground including 10 autoracks west of Banff. Anyone know where exactly.

Mile 87 is halfway between Banff and Massive. That's a bit west of where the BV Parkway begins and the TCH crosses over the tracks and the river and goes to the other side of the valley. Can't be seen from either TCH or BV Pkwy.

So between the Hwy 1 overpass and the old siding of Sawback. The location is pretty much next to the Bow River isn't it?

I thought Mile 87 rang a bell, it's an intermediate signal.

According to a post on Facebook the derailment took the intermediate signal out. Lol

It is close. The river meanders quite a bit in that area so sometimes it's trackside and sometimes not.

I recall an intermodal train derailing in the same area in 1995 or 1996. I checked for a TSB report and there isn't one. I do recall that it was an eastbound and at least one container ended up inthe river. It was loaded with cans of salmon. I was the chair of the Transportation sector at the Bow Valley Study Round Table at the time. One of the environmental sectors wanted me to remind CP that importing non-native fish into National Parks waters was illegal.

There is a Loc-Bloc wall (concrete Lego) and a flange greaser there too.

You almost owed me a new laptop. I was drinking coffee when I read the thing about the cans of salmon. Lol

There was a Massive Banff before everything abruptly stopped.
