Canadian Railroads > F-Unit Friday - VIA's Canadian at Stittsville, ON

Just a 3/4 wedge shot of VIA #1 zipping through the town of Stittsville, west of Ottawa and Kanata, on the Carleton Place Sub. The time is 1255 on November 22, 1988. I can't remember why we'd swung out here for the day, but my wife was happy to let me hoof down the main drag to bag this on-time, or close enough to it, movement. FP9A 6511 leads steam generator car 15471, baggage car, two more, and Chateau Montcalm. The townhouses look close to the tracks, but at this point, there were only two trains per day, both the Canadian, so no major disruption. Many, many years ago, Trains magazine ran a two-page B&W spread showing the regular meet of CP's #1 and 2 at this siding. I think Jim Shaughnessy may have been the photographer.

Back in the 1960's, Stittsville was out in the country near Ottawa. 

In the years before cable TV, the antenna on our TV in Montreal could pick up CJOH TV from Ottawa and offered shows not available in Montreal.

A frequent advertizer was a car dealership that was "Just beyond the fringe, in Stittsville"

Many Ottawa area communities are named after United Empire Loyalists who fled to Canada after the US Revolution. I think Stittsville was named after Colonel Stitt of the Loyalist Army.

Keep it coming, nice image! I was in Ottawa earlier today with my family and snuck away for a bit to shoot a few trains, including the sole freight train in the area (CN 589).

Thanks for putting me in a time capsule; I'd totally forgotten Dilawri Motors, "Just beyond the fringe". My memory says it was Chev-Olds, and they ended up expanding to other makes, with KD Mazda (one of the Dilawri Brothers' first name started with K) one of their brands in Ottawa proper. I lived in Ottawa 1961-1979. Even CJOH, the CTV affiliate, competitor of CBOT, the CBC brand. Wow, roll back the years.

It is the Montreal-Sudbury section of the "Canadian". At Sudbury, it will be combined with the Toronto-Vancouver section.

After the cuts of November 1981 the Ottawa, Carleton Place and the upper Ottawa Valley market was served the a 3 times a week RDC train. The Canadian was re-introduced on June 1st, 1985 and like Phil stated, it met the Toronto - Vancouver section on the Canadian in Sudbury.  The only car in Fred's great image that carried on to Vancouver was the sleeper (stainless steel car in Fred's photo), the coach passengers had to make a cross platform connection.  The power and consist less he sleeper overnighted in Sudbury and waited for the Toronto bound Canadian's through sleeper to Montreal.  This situation lasted until April 29th, 1989 when VIA cut the Montreal-Vancouver sleeper, now everyone from Montreal, Ottawa and the valley had to make the cross platform connection in Sudbury.  On January 15th, 1990 in was all gone.

Another bit of useless infomation is the CP always called the location, "Stittville" in the timetables.

Nice additions, Gerry! I never saw a triple on the Budd; I moved back to Ottawa in August 1984, and shot the WB version of this train many times, wishing it was a "real" train.
