The past couple of days the 5976 has been working a CWR train stringing out rail. Today, they're working between Banff and Massive. They had to back up to Banff to clear for an eastbound.

The 5976 first showed up working with an AC4400 but that got swiped on Thursday by a 301 to take it further west to Eldon for another 301 that had a unit die.

The 5976 worked the rest of Thursday by itself stringing out rail between Gap and Canmore

I think the 6045 has been hanging out in Lake Louise on plow service lately.

5976 can't go back out yet. It has to wait for a 301 which is at Canmore for 112.

301 has just departed Canmore West. (Mile 70.x)

Nice shots of the Rail Train.  Great to see a pair of CP SD40-2s working together on anything these days.

I second perklocal's comment about the rail train pictures. And some great pictures of containers as well.

What's the story on the extra pipes over the radiators on the 6045...not seen that before?

These are air compressor aftercooler pipes. They were first installed on 5913 and 5914 as experimental fittings, the last two units in class DRF-30s, built 1/79. They then became standard on GMDD production of the SD40-2 for CP, starting with class DRF-30u, units 5950 and higher, first build dates 10/80. The QNS&L SD40s, starting with 206-218 (became CP 5402-5414), also had this feature; they were built in 1971.

I forget the story behind the extra 4 grills the 6045 and a few others had. ........ Mr Clark?

I assume they are covered over because it was in snowplow service.

Air-cooled air compressor replacing a water-cooled version.

The modification for snow plow service involved covering the central air intake, behind the cab, and installing four carbody filters on each side, back on the long hood, to take in air. I must admit to being puzzled at seeing those also taped [?] over in your shot of 6045. I'm not sure how this locomotive is drawing air.

Normally this shows up in whether or not there are rows of louvres below the radiator intakes. The SD40 on CP had a water cooled Gardner-Denver air compressor, but the initial GMDD SD40-2 production had an air-cooled Wabco version, thus louvres to allow air to be sucked in. Starting with class DRF30m, in 11/74, they went back to water-cooled Gardner-Denver units (I don't know why), so the louvres were not needed any more. So you see in this pair of units the lack of louvres, hence water-cooled air compressor, and thus the four filter patch shouldn't relate to that. I think.
