Doug:

What's that grey box above your head?
I've never seen the likes of it on any locomotives I operated.

Image 1: Continuing on the haircut theme, based on one of my old high school principals, who used to monitor hair length by riffling boys' hair that was onto their collars: "See you in my office tomorrow at 8 o'clock, with a haircut."

Image 2: Hogger thinking to himself, "I wonder if he's figured out when to hit the shutter so he doesn't get the pole shadow on the nose? He should have set up further back."

The grey box, was for "in cab communication". We were issued headsets / hearing protectors with a microphone that plugged into the grey box, there was a volume control as well as a push to talk button. Also there was a cord connected with a push to talk button that could be clipped to any surface or hand held, push the button to talk to the conductor if he had his headset on. Also we could hear and talk with the train dispatcher with these headsets. The headset / hearing protectors were of high quailty, very similar to what a helicopter / airplane pilot would wear. They got heavy after several hours of use but sure cut down on the noise.

Just about the time he got the shutter speed and focus right and ready to push the shutter button, I would shut off the headlights just to improve things.

Good old David Clark headsets. Wore them for the military for almost 30 years and they must have worked, I can still hear!
