Devco RS-1
Author: briancdn

At Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1982, freshly shopped Alco RS-1 basks in the sunshine. Ex SOO 2366 built in 1951. I'm presuming it was shopped by the CN at Moncton, but if anyone has other info, please expand.

No additional info but that's a great looking RS-1.

Very sharp, and quite reminscent of the Green Mountain versions in Vermont.

Yep, almost looks like they "borrowed" it from the Rutland.

They mounted a big snowplow on one of these!

Devco had a pretty capable shop at Victoria Jct., outside Sydney, so it's quite possible the painting was done there.  For that matter, CN was able to paint diesels at their shop in Sydney.  Would CN have moved it to Moncton with friction bearing trucks?

The 300 was the subject of my very first slide, in the summer of 1976.  I spent that summer playing music on a parade float for the telephone company, and on July 5 we were in the Sydney Mines parade.  The marshalling area was near the CN station, and this RS-1 was parked on a side track near it.  I didn't have a camera with me, but borrowed one from somebody else to get a few snaps.  I didn't realize until the summer was over, and he gave me the two slides that it didn't have print film in it.  Unfortunately, they were not stored very carefully for the first 30 years, and have some ground in dust on them, but they are recognizable as an RS-1.

I recall reading somewhere that 300 ended its days on a disconnected track somewhere in the Sydney area.  Not sure if it was on display or just stored, but eventually it was vandalized, became an eyesore, and was then scrapped.  Two of the other Devco RS-1s went to the Salem & Hillsborough museum in New Brunswick, where they were destroyed by a fire in 1994.  Most of the other RS-1s were disposed of in the early '80s, so perhaps this one was just given a paint job to be put on display?

Thanks for all the great info. So probably it was painted at Sydney; I was only through that part of the country once. 300 was just a lucky catch! Sorry to hear it was scrapped.
Somewhere I have a few other Devco shots. I'll find them one day! They also had an RS27 or two.
