Two 2108s (MLW Monday)
Author: cn6218

CN's 2100 series was occupied by the last 251-powered diesels, the Bombardier HR-616s.  When new, pairs of them powered priority freights in the Maritimes on a regular basis with the other MLWs, M-636s and C-630Ms.  But in 1990, with the arrival of the GE cowls, 2400s, they were bumped to secondary duty, frequently powering the gypsum trains between Dartmouth and Milford, NS.  That's what 2108, in the company of SD40-2 5379 and sister 2118, were doing at Wellington, as they split the approach signals to Kinsac on November 13, 1996 with loaded 701 train.

19 years later, on June 26, 2015, a new 2108 was leading the empty train (now designated train 511) past mile 29 on the way to the mine.  2108 is the former UP 9073, née CNW 8561 which CN acquired in 2010.  It was built to haul coal for CNW, but seems to be right at home with the gypsum, far from the Powder River basin.

A nice pair of photos, imaginatively threaded together. The shot of the HR-616s, with the onset of winter, is really sharp. The black masks set them apart from other CN power.
