Canadian Railroads > Illinois Central "Deathstar" Visits HalifaxDate: 12/01/21 13:19 Illinois Central "Deathstar" Visits Halifax Author: cn6218 It's been a few years since a locomotive in IC black (with the circular "deathstar" logo) has made an appearance in Halifax, or least since I've seen one. SD40s of any type have been rare here for years, and SD70s, both the regular ICs and CN-painted comfort cabs, also seem to have been mostly sidelined in favour of more GEs. But early the morning of November 19th, ET44AC CN 3008, in Illinois Central tribute paint, arrived on an extra 120 in Halifax. And then it stayed for a few days to work as a switcher!
later that morning, local 517 had 3844 and 3008 for power as they dragged a long cut of double-stacks from Rockingham to Ocean Terminals. 517's crew left them on the old north main line (all rule 105, yard limits, now out to mile 1.8), and then went over to the PSA pier to pick up some other loaded tracks. That's what they're doing in the third picture, with the pier and harbour in the foggy background. Just ahead of 3844 is the now gone switch that completed the other end of the loop around the pier.
