Rocky Mountaineer diverts Jasper trains to Banff
Author: railsmith

Owing to wildfires near Jasper on the east side, Rocky Mountaineer has begun diverting Jasper via Kamloops trains to Banff.

This affects the departures on September 6, 9 and 13 from Vancouver and the corresponding return trips from Jasper on September 8, 11 and 15.

As of now, Rocky is still working on plans for the North Vancouver to Jasper via Quesnel departure on September 10 (and return on September 13).

VIA service appears to be unaffected but that might be because the main issue is accommodation in Jasper while power outages are occurring regularly. VIA's Canadian passes very close to the wildfire location.

To update my original post, the train via Quesnel departed as per schedule on September 10, but was terminated at Prince George after making the usual overnight stops at Whistler and Quesnel. Passengers were flown from Prince George to Calgary, and southbound passengers were flown from Calgary to Prince George to start their train trips.

The same procedure will be followed for the remaining two departures of the season, on September 17 and 24.

Rocky has extended this change to cover all eastbound departures through September 27 and westbound departures through September 29. Altogether, this diversion will have affected seven trains in each direction.

Jasper established reliable power supply by September 14, so the additional diversions were not required. Only the eastbound trips of September 6, 9 and 13, and corresponding westbound trips of September 8, 11 and 15 were affected.

On the route to Jasper via Whsitler and Quesnel, only the September 10 departure from North Vancouver needed to be terminated at Prince George. The two final departures of the season, on September 17 and 24, were reinstated to run all the way to Jasper.
