Big storm coming
Author: march_hare

Looks like Nova Scotia and PEI are in the path of a big leftover hurricane, described by weather services as a Canadian version of superstorm Sandy.

No more railroads left on PEI, but for Moncton and Halifax, this looks like the real deal.

Definitely a bad day to go surfing in the Bay of Fundy.

As predicted, Hurricane Fiona hit the Maritimes during the night. VIA had cancelled the Friday departures of the Ocean from both Montreal and Halifax. They are expected to operate Sunday.

Fiona went through our area, Weymouth on the south west side of Nova Scotia. Fortuantely the wind and rain was not too severe during the night. We lost power briefly but it was back on this morning in time to make fresh brewed coffee. There are isolated power outages in our area and from what I have heard damage is minimal. Winds will subside early this afternoon and I'll go for a drive to sruvey local damage.
Rest of the province is a mess with extensive power outages as well as other wind / water damage.
Thoughts and Prayers for all those impacted by this storm.
Fiona is a real bitch....

Doug

Things weren't too bad in the Halifax area, although with power out north of here, crossing flashers are not working (batteries have died by now), and trains must manually protect the crossings, reducing speed to 15 mph for the last 60 miles into Halifax.  Z120, which arrived here about 09:00, spent over 8 hours on the road..  The usual time is 4:40.

VIA 15 left more or less on time today.  You can check on its progress on Transitdocs.
