Some Cartier from 22 years ago OTD
Author: perklocal

Back in October of 2000 a couple of my buddies and I spent a week up north on the Ore Roads in Quebec and Labrador. We concentrated on the Cartier, but got to spend some time on the QNSL,Wabush/Arnaud and IOC Electrics. October 2 was a Cartier day and we began the morning following a set of Northbound Empties out of Port Cartier,QC. with a set of their M636s (QCM 75,47,43). It was a very foggy and misty morning and we set up for our first shot at MP 9.2 known as "Able". The Cartier uses a Phonetic Alphabet Code designation to identify their Control Points and Sidings running South to North. (Able, Baker, Charles, Dog, Eva, Fox, etc.)  Our second shot was at Tunnel 1 (MP 29.7) between Baker and Charles. The Northbound Empties stopped at Charles to meet Southbound Loads  powered by QCM 71,79,73 (M636,C636,M636).

Top shot of the Conductor on the Northbound Empties doing a Roll By inspection of the Southbound Loads at Charles. Once the Loads cleared the Empties smoked it up as they accelerated out of Charles. Next shot was at MP 48.8 between Charles and Dog.

Next shot of the Empties was along Lac Vailee north of Dog. We took our last shot of the Empties at MP 60 as they climbed upgrade between Dog and Eva. As you can imagine there are limited or no possibilities to chase some of the remote sections of the Cartier by road and this was one of them. We decided to pull out our Coleman Stove and make some lunch while we waited for the next set of Southbound Loads. There are no convenience stores or Tim Hortons or even gas stations along the Cartier so make sure you are well provisioned. We went back down to MP 48.8 and finally got the sun to burn through some of the fog. Southbound QCM 84, one of the freshly rebuilt M636s, was leading 41 and 49.

Next shot at MP 36 north of Charles. Final shot at MP 22.5 below Baker. I'll post our October 3 escapades tomorrow. That day was spent up on the northern end of the Cartier.

Great stuff! That's a wild signal in the first shot. Any idea what the indications are? The "crossing signal" under the top two heads has me scratching mine.

Those lights are connected to a Dragging Equipment Detector.

So the top two heads govern train movement?

You know you're really out in the bush when there isn't a Timmies nearby.

Nice photos, very good, especially for a remote railway.

I see you are posting more photosets -- for those that don't regularly check out the Canadian board, see:
