Day #4 On the QNSL with some Wabush Lake Rwy. 22 yrs. ago OTD
Author: perklocal

Today would be spent on the QNSL hoping to catch the Wabush Lake Railway RS18s. We had been bouncing back and forth from Quebec and Labrador between the Cartier and QNSL for the past couple of days.  We had to remember that whenever we crossed over to Labrador we were on Atlantic Time. We found some QNSL power at the Yard in Labrador City just as the sun came up.  C40-8M 403 (blt.3-94) was 1 of only 3 on the roster.

Had to take another shot of their nicely painted Bucyrus Erie Hook. Then it was over to the Wabush Lake Railway where we found a quartet of their RS18s (910,908,907,911) getting ready to leave the Scully Mine with a Loaded Ore Train. The Wabush Lake Railway and sister Railway Chemin de Fer Arnaud (both owned by Wabush Iron Co.) shared a roster of 11 RS18s. The WLRY transports the ore over the QNSL 36 miles to the connection with the QNSL's north south line at Ross Bay Jct. The QNSL forwards the ore down to Arnaud Jct. where the Arnaud Railway picks it up and carries it for another 25 miles to it's port facilities at Pointe Noire,QC. where it is loaded into Lakers that transport it to the mills. This was the operation in 2000. Lots of things have changed since then and the RS18s are now off the roster. Today turned out to be another Fire and Ice Day.  Sun to Snow Squalls and everything in between.

Roster shots of WLRY 910 and 911. The first place we got the eastbound WLRY with 109 Loads on the QNSL was west of Opocopa,NL. (MP 24)

Next shot west of Manistouc,NL. (MP 13.5)  After that we caught an Empty QNSL Ore train with C44-9W 409 crossing one of the causeways on Lac De Mille. Another C44-9W 413 was the DPU on this train. After that we got to shoot the eastbound Carol Lake Express (aka-The Shuttle) at Opocopa in another squall. This Mixed Train ran from Labrador City out to Ross Bay Junction where it made a connection with QNSL's North South Passenger Train from Schefferville,QC. to Sept Iles,QC.

Top shot of the Shuttle on the causeway on Lac De Mille. Middle shot along Shabogamo Lake (MP 13). By this time the WLRY had traded their Loads for Empties at Ross Bay Jct. and were headed back west and we got them coming and going away at Opocopa (MP 22)

Going away shot at Opocopa. By the time we got back to Labrador City we found QNSL SD40-2s 305 and 319 sunning themselves. Last shot of QNSL 414 C44-9W (blt.8-98) along with SD40-2 313 with a loaded train waiting at Wabush Lake Jct. for the WLRY empties to clear up. The QNSL line from Ross Bay Jct. to Labrador City kept us busy all day !   Last installment tomorrow when we get to shoot the IOC Electrics in action.

I've looked for the way that QNSL unloads their new equipment from watercraft to their new home rails.  I cannot find any railbarge dock at Sept-Iles on Google Satellite view.  Are they unloaded from ships by cranes?
I've found a railbarge dock on the Arnaud Ry. at Pointe Noire.  Does QNSL come in by railbarge and get unloaded at the Arnaud dock?

On 9/18/98 while on a fishing trip with my father in the 1000 Islands, we had a lucky encounter with the downbound JumboShip "Fairload" on the St. Lawrence River near Clayton,NY. with at least 5 new QNSL GE 9-44-CW units (407,409,411,412,414) on deck. I'm pretty sure they were offloaded by crane at Sept Iles.
