VIA Charger 2201
Author: Ray_Murphy

I was waiting on the footbridge at Beaconsfield Sunday afternoon for VIA #26 to come by, when this short train bringing Siemens Charger 2201 to Montreal came by first.

VIA is going to use semi-fixed consists on their corridor trains.

I don't know if that will work for all Corridor trains. The Windsor - Montreal thru train is longer than most, is not a "J train" that splits at Brockville, and has a baggage car.

What train is that?  There's no through train in the timetable.

Am I correct in understanding that the new VIA corridor trains don't have checked baggage spaces?

The timetable never explictly stated it. Separate tables and the train numbers changed at Toronto, but the equipment ran through, and they announce it on board. Check the baggage car symbol to get a clue as to which train it is. It also tends to get HEP-II rather than LRC cars.

In the last printed timetable (June 2018), Train 72 from Windsor had checked baggage service. Departed 09:05, arrived Toronto 13:11. The only Toronto-Montreal trains with baggage cars were 62 (dep. 09:20) and 64 (dep. 11:30). So no evident through-running there.

In the current timetable, Train 72 departs Windsor at 08:43, arrives Toronto at 13:05. The connecting train to Montreal is 66, departing at 15:17. But there's no indication (that I can find) in the online timetable that there is baggage service on either train.

They must  have broken it up since I last looked. It was generally an 8 car HEP-II consist with an F40.

VIA suspended checked baggage service in the corridor early in the pandemic. The exception would be the occasional Renaissance train, on which there is very little space for on-board luggage.
