Extra Power for an Extra Westbound
Author: cn6218

Z120 arrived in Halifax on May 9 with a surplus of power.  That usually means there will be an extra (X123) westbound in the next day or so, and sure enough, CN ran an X123 about two hours after Z121 departed that same night.

Z120 was nearing mile 9 in Bedford at 09:42, with 2678, 2534, 5665, 3877 and 3267 on the head end.  Nine minutes later they were nearing the Birch Cove switch, the entrance to Rockingham Yard, on the Transfer Track.  The Canadian Tire containers in the background are tracing the shoreline of Birch Cove.  Finally at 10:07, the DPU, ES44DC 2238 appeared on the Birch Cove fill.  The train was early enough this day that the light stayed on the north side of the track most of the way in, ruling out the usual shot of the curve.

The two ACs, 3877 and 3267, likely left on X123 that night, with the four DC locomotives handling the regular train.
