VIA was in operation as of April 1,1978. March 31, 1978 was when the CN passenger dept with equipment ( then called VIAcn) was transferred to VIA Rail Canada. Gerry Gaugl Ottawa ON Edited 1 time(s). When I heard one is not allowed to take photos of the Canadian's power in Hornepayne, ON (one has to step off the platform and on CN's property) it just boggles the mind. I'm glad you were able to get your fine shots Gary. :>)

Gary Date: 09/14/23 11:29 Re: The Canadian in Winnipeg - Dec 1982 Author: steve4031 When I was a junior in high school I was very lucky to be allowed to travel on a 22-day rail pass. Of course, I was thoroughly amped about my first ride on the famous Canadian. I asked a VIA employee if it would be okay for me to go up on the platform to watch the arrival of 1. I explained that I knew not to get on the train and promised to go back downstairs to wait to board. I was astonished when I was given permission to go up to the platform. I was used to Amtak employees saying no to railfan-related requests. Also, since I was a teenager, I was not expecting any preferential treatment. I had been standing on the platform for a few minutes when another employee came along and shooed me back downstairs. I did the walk of shame down the stairs and then walked outside to stand in the parking lot where I would have a view of 1 entering the station.
A few minutes later the employee who had granted permission walked up to me in the parking lot and asked why I wasn't on the platform. I explained that I had been asked to go back downstairs. The. the employee asked me why I hadn't explained that he had granted me permission. I told him that I did not want him to get in trouble. He stated, "I can't get in trouble. I am the station master. Come with me. And he walked me back up to the platform. I will never forget this experience. |
