Canadian Railroads > Suggestions for a winter trip to Prince Rupert?Date: 09/15/23 19:13 Suggestions for a winter trip to Prince Rupert? Author: march_hare I appear to have spousal approval for another solo train ride across Canada this winter, this time to Prince Rupert.
Any suggestions to share, especially where to stay in Jasper, where to stay overnight on the run to Prince Rupert, and in Prince Rupert itself? Can I get a ferry out of Prince Rupert that time of year? And does the dome car run that time of year? Date: 09/15/23 20:57 Re: Suggestions for a winter trip to Prince Rupert? Alaska or Port Hardy on Vancouver Island? Ferry schedules constantly change so what month specifically? march_hare Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I appear to have spousal approval for another solo > train ride across Canada this winter, this time to > Prince Rupert. > > Any suggestions to share, especially where to stay > in Jasper, where to stay overnight on the run to > Prince Rupert, and in Prince Rupert itself? > > Can I get a ferry out of Prince Rupert that time > of year? > > And does the dome car run that time of year? Nice place and the restaurant was good when I was there back in 2019. Date: 09/16/23 14:55 Re: Suggestions for a winter trip to Prince Rupert? Author: rschonfelder There will be a dome Observation car on that train; always has it all year. There is a ferry to Port Hardy but that will put you at the northern edge of Vancouver Island. You would be better to fly down to YVR and head home wherever that is.
Rick Date: 09/16/23 19:36 Re: Suggestions for a winter trip to Prince Rupert? Author: Jimbo BC Ferries operates from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy on the north end of Vancouver Island. It's a beautiful trip, through the Inside Passage. There is air and rental car service at Port Hardy, and may still be bus service, to either Vancouver or Victoria. Ferry service in the winter is either once or twice a week. Check out the BC Ferries website.
https://www.bcferries.com/ There are several hotels in Jasper close to the VIA station, but I'm not sure if all are open in the winter. Prince George has several hotels not too far from the VIA station. I have stayed at the Travelodge, which was OK. In Prince Rupert I would also recommend the Crest Hotel. Somehow, I had the idea that you could get a ferry from Prince Rupert to Vancouver, but I couldn't find such a thing on the internet. Now I know why. And yes, I understand that the weather will suck. That's regarded as a feature, not a glitch. Date: 09/19/23 09:02 Re: Suggestions for a winter trip to Prince Rupert? Author: DJ-12 You can also check into what I did in 2009: train to Prince Rupert then rent a car the next morning and railfan your way back to Terrace, which had good flight options to Vancouver.
