Pacific Northwest Trip - Part 2
Author: JayK

Part 1 documents our trip in Idaho and can be found on the Western Railroads board:  https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,5746579,5746587#msg-5746587

After crossing the border at Eastport, ID / Kingsgate, BC we headed to Cranbrook via Rt 95. We saw two southbound CPKC trains staged in Kingsgate but nothing to photograph.

1. CP 4090 and 4469 are on display at the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel in Cranbrook, BC. The cosmetically restored MLW FA-2 and FB-2 were moved here in 1992 and repainted into their original Canadian Pacific paint scheme in 2015. 9/10/2023 at 1:31 PM

2. As we crossed Crowsnest pass we were awed by the scenery but didn't find a train until we happened across a westbound sitting in the siding at Natal. We back tracked to this location along the Crowsnest Highway. CP 8802 leads the grain train through the ever lengthening shadows along Crowsneck Creek. 9/10/2023 at 4:27 PM.

3. We found this interesting piece of MOW equipment in Fort Macleod, AB. CP9507-20 was reportedly rebuilt from GP38AC #3005. 9/10/2023 7:07 PM

The following day, September 11th, we hoped to photograph locals on the Taber and Montana Subdivisions powered by EMD second generation 4 and 6 axle units. Unfortunately the symbols, schedules, and motive power had changed since the Railfan article in December 2022.

4. After waiting at the east end of the bridge in Lethbridge we went in search of a train. We found CP 4418 and 6239 working at Kipp Yard. 9/11/2023 at 8:47 AM

5. We then followed the Taber Subdivision east and saw one westbound. We passed on the backlit ES44 leader. At Dunmore Yard in Medicine Hat we found CP 2275 (EMD GP20C-ECO) and CP 5946 (SD40-2) putting together train C22-11, the Medicine Hat to Golden Prairie, AB local. 9/11/2023 at 1:00 PM

6. We then headed west on the Brooks Subdivision and caught up with a westbound intermodal that we photographed at Gleichen, AB. 9/11/2023 5:07 PM

7. On the way back to Lethbridge we stumbled across the Aspen Crossing Railway Museum in Mossleigh, AB. Three beautifully preserved grain elevators shine in gorgeous evening light. 9/11/2023 5:48 PM

8. Another elevator complex in Vulcan, AB is just as stunning. 9/11/2023 6:38 PM.

That's a nice assortment of photos and locations. The second shot reminds me of getting stabbed in the heart by sinking sun at that very location, back in 2009. We had a WB led by UP power coming off the Fabro Loop, and were set up here in gorgeous late day sun. The sun continued to sink, the shadows lengthened, and the slowest train in the world passed by in shadow. I used my Fujicrap camera instead of the one loaded with one of my last rolls of K64.

Great series Jim. A lot of miles covered.  I have yet to catch a CP Power Unit for myself but I did catch CP403012 in its previous life.

Photo: 3005 GMD GP38AC Blt:London, ON 1970.  The train is arriving from Merritt, BC at Spences Bridge, BC.  The CP Rail Thompson sub is in the background. February 4, 1986.

I think I liked it better as a GP38AC!

That's a spectacular shot, Gerry! Operation on that trackage was long gone by the time I made it to this area in the early 2000s. The snowshields really made those units look great.

GP-38ac 3005 was one of two locomotives painted green and yellow for the Esquimalt and Nanaimo railroad when it was part of CP Rail. Cheers

To wit, here is 3005 leading a freight train on its way to Port Alberni in October 1997; this at Cameron Lake.  The second photo (angle not the best) is from April 2006 after it had been repainted into a two-tone green.  I recall that Athearn (?) came out with a HO gauge model of both 3004 and 3005 in E&N Railfreight livery.

Neat shots to see. I suspect the two-tone green isn't like BCOL's deliberately chosen scheme, but rather a function of what the cheapest green paint was that they had lying around when they wanted to patch things out.
